Speedo modifications

 A new page for the speedo and instrument changes that will be needed for 1966 Humber analogue dash to work with the current digital parts of the Mitsubishi engine and gearbox.

To start I pulled the original Vogue speedo apart to see how they made the little strip move.

Now my Triton 2WD gearbox has an electronic sender built in and no provision like the earlier models to slip a drive cable in the spot. So I have been investigating cost effective ways of getting a working speedo. The next picture is the dash cluster from a TF Mitsubishi Magna. I bought it because in the vacuum of useful information that is a modern service manual there is nothing about the instrument. 

You will observe the speedo has an odometer that looks same as a mechanical cable drive speedo but the dash cluster is all electronic. I suspected that Mitsubishi had gone down a path I was looking at and just converted a string of data pulses to drive a little motor to spin an old style speedo.

Too rich for me :-)  So buying a cheap Magna dash was a way to see if Mitsubishi Had done it for me.
On arrival I dismantled instrument cluster and discovered that the electronic to mechanical drive was only for the odometer. Probably due to some obscure Australian regulation that vehicle odometers may not be able to be wound back. All cool money not wasted as I can use the cluster anyway.

All very neatly packaged, the short version is there is a stepper motor driving the speedo mounted on the circuit board and the little pulser motor that clicks the mechanical odometer around in time to the music.
The Speedo and Tacho are about 100mm/4" diameter and the cluster also has a temperature and fuel gauge that talk with the Mitsubishi temperature and fuel level senders.

The cluster is too tall to fit in the available space in the Vogue so one option is to rehouse these instruments in a new cluster that does fit. I am not excited by the original Vogue dashboard and so creating something more sporty is a better idea. I also have some slightly smaller 80mm diameter gauges that look the part for Tacho and Speedo



The slightly larger Magna gauges look the part better in my mind, so I will investigate that option first.


The style of the Vogue dash is a fail to my eyes. Same as the original set up in my Series VI Minx.
I much preferred the clean lines of the Series V Minx or the Super Minx.
